Up and away into the Rhön

Black Moor

Schwarzes Moor

Schwarzes Moor (Black Moor) lies directly adjacent to the Hochröhnstrasse (High Rhön Road). A 2.2-km pathway of wooden planks without steep gradients gives visitors of all ages easy access and an ideal way to discover more about this unique landscape. The upland moor is home to numerous rare species of flora and fauna, and fascinating descriptions of these are provided on 23 information boards along the route. The viewing tower about halfway along the path offers a fantastic view of the entire landscape.

Rotes Moor

Rotes Moor

With 314 hectares, the Rote Moor (Red Moor) is the largest moorland in the Rhön region. It is easily reached via the B278 road from Bischofsheim. Simply park in the "Moordorf" car park and walk 200 m to the lake. Footpaths, circular walks and, in winter, cross-country ski trails, guide you through the wonderful nature of the Red Moor. Although the Red Moor is far larger than the Black Moor, its scenic discovery pathway complete with information boards is only half as long, at 1.2 km

Wasserkuppe

Wasserkuppe

At 950 metres, the "Gliders' Mountain" is the highest in the Rhön and indeed the state of Hessen. Its numerous attractions include a number of footpaths and circular walks, mountain bike trails and cycle paths, a summer toboggan run, the glider museum, restaurants and much more.
All day long you can watch glider pilots enjoying their hobby, while winter enticements include downhill pistes, well-laid cross-country skiing tracks, snowkiting, snowboarding, tobogganing and a halfpipe.

Hiking in the Rhön

Hiking in the Rhön

The Rhön is a true walkers' paradise. In addition to the well-known "Hochröhner" long-distance trail, you have a virtually infinite choice of footpaths and circular walks.
From the spa town of Bad Kissingen, the "Hochröhner" route extends 180 km all the way to the salt-water spa of Bad Salzungen. Its route will take you across the moorlands of the Rhön and up the Wasserkuppe, which was described above. For those who are not yet familiar with the Rhön, we recommend a day trip from your hotel to the destinations named here. Almost all of the points of interest can be reached in a 30-minute drive and also by public transport.
